Disclaimer: I only made it about 50 pages in. I just hated it. Most likely I didn't even get to the main storyline. Maybe it would get better, but I plan to move on to another book now.

So, I've read about 50 pages or so, and I still don't know if the protagonist is a man or a woman. Maybe that's OK. But somehow I don't get the feeling that this is part of the plot or plan. I just think of it as bad writing. It certainly FEELS like it is a man. I think the synopsis uses the word "he" or "his" or something like that. Yet.. in the opening pages this character is wearing a wig and some high heels. Gay? Cross Dresser? OK. That wouldn't make me dislike the book or downvote it. But again, it just doesn't come off as if this is part of the plot or storyline. Just bad writing. Like I've missed something.

The book stumbles from event to event with no continuity. Example (SPOILER COMES NEXT): Main character is in a bar, gets in a fight, abused by the police, gets away. OK. fine... Decides he can't "go home" and two sentences later he's started a new life. Can't get a job. Moves to a new town. Something. Just "matter of fact." I gave up here...

A Smaller Hell eBook A J Reid Reviews

I enjoyed it and it's title is appropriate we all have a version of a smaller hell
A page turner with some rather bizarre twists, but an extremely entertaining read. One truly comes to care about the characters within.
Little hard to follow - lots of jumping around - but good overall. I would recommend it.
I found this book to be over thought in some areas and skimmed over in other areas. I was not able to finish the book.
Well written with engaging, fully realized characters and enough backstory to make sense of it all. Very creative and well done. Some what in the style of " Diary of the displaced." I will be looking eagerly for more from this author.
Beautifully written with rich imagery; the atmosphere is surreal but tense. Tony Black is in hiding and will take work wherever he can, even if he's warned to stay away from Tanner's Department over and over again. Tony soon begins to see how completely Ms Doyle controls her employees, and how cruelly she exploits them. She is the tyrant of Tanner's, she has four police officers under her thumb, and she always gets what she wants...or else.
I enjoyed this book at times, but had to force myself through it at others. It was confusing at times as to who certain characters were (unless that was because I was reading while tired when they introduced the characters. It was a weird premise, but pretty unique, which can be good. I didn't really feel like the main characters were as flushed out as I would have liked, but the settings were well-described and interesting.
