To be Shakespeare, or not to be Shakespeare.Shakespeare's characters are alive, kicking, and causing as much mischief as they possibly can no matter what traditional characters they were in Shakespeare's plays. They are no longer just names in a folio. They are but real people who can change the course of this books history, and the course of other characters in this story. The author using Shakespeare characters and writing their involvement into this story is fantastic. I love the way the author weaves a magical, fantasy, fast paced, love story and adventure all combined into one. This was a massively enjoyable book. It all seems so familiar because of the Shakespeare characters, the background and the timeline, but it isn't, it is a fresh, new and totally awesome read.
There is civil war in England. As the war goes on, our protagonist, the prince, and his right hand man are held as prisoners. They were caught while trying to help the rightful King stay on the throne. The Prince is treated extremely well by his captors, but knows he must escape! During this time our prince also meets the love of his life. The star crossed lovers, are dealing with a ton of storyline. They are planning an escape, are involved in a religious war, death is all around, betrayal of family and friends, evil, hate, greed, mischief, promises kept and broken. The only way the prince knows how to help his King is to go to Europe and get reinforcements. Along the way, he meets these strange Shakespeare characters and his reality, friendships, and outlook on the war and his life starts to change. This gives him and his small group of friends some interesting meetings with these Shakespeare characters. The information the friends gleans from the likes of the Faerie Folks, Puck, King Oberon, Queen Titania and others sends them on an adventure. These are the spirits who send them to Prospero's Island where they run into Ariel, Ariel's Faeries and Caliban. The book moves back to the mainland and the war is still raging. But with the help and encouragement of all involved the story really takes off with magnificent, strong writing.

Imaginative and full of strange words, old language and dialect all of which makes it both interesting and difficult to read. There are references to the two Shakespeare plays referred to in the title and mighty battles, sorcery and poetry
All in all it adds up to a very good yarn
A wonderful fantasy novel in the world of Shakespeare's England. Rich language.
One of my favorite Poul Anderson works, this romp through time travel and alternate history moves quickly and enjoyably through an alternate world where William Shakespeare is the Great Historian, and everything he wrote is literally true. It is set during the English Civil War, and the outcome of that event is, well, Shakespearean. I've read it many times, and each reading is more enjoyable than the last.
A fantastic giddy journey into a world that might have, may have been where faery magics and beauty coexist with our own glorious nature. It is also a timeless lesson of tolerance and fidelity. If your heart longs fir the unseen and you dream of sailing on moonbeams then this is a wondrous vision to indulge in.
It really came to life only when Shakespeare's characters appeared, as well the 'modern' characters from alternate time-lines. Rupert was a bit of a snooze. I also had a problem with the author--out of understandable distaste at Puritanism--deciding to idealize the Stuart monarchy. He did get one thing right it would indeed have required supernatural intervention to make the Stuarts into liberal tolerant kings.
interesting take on an alternative history. HOWEVER, the real charles I was a sleazy, duplicitous character.
if he had acted with even a modicum of honor, they wouldn't have had to execute him.
other than that, i would recommend it as an interesting read. some very good shakespearean humor
and the writing style is excellent.
Poul Anderson is an underrated genius. This book is a fun alternate history novel based around the idea that everything in Shakespeare's plays was historically accurate. So, that means some technology was developed early, fairies are real, and magic works. The book could be considered an early version of steampunk if one felt like using genre labels. It is a lot of fun and Anderson fans will appreciate the cameos by characters from Operation Chaos and his classic Three Hearts and Three Lions.
