Dark Tide I: Onslaught by Michael A. Stackpole is the second book in the New Jedi Order following Vector Prime by R. A. Salvatore. The entire series is the story of the New Republic's war against the invading Yuuzhan Vong. Vector Prime basically introduced us to the Vong. Dark Tide I spends more time with the New Republic side and does not add a great deal to our understanding of the invaders. Of course, we have something like 19 books in the series to enlighten us about the Yuuzhan Vong.

The action is set in a time when the New Republic is in turmoil. Political disagreements abound, and Luke Skywalker is running into heavy resistance with his leadership of the Jedi and his plan to reestablish the Jedi Council. This is not a good time for an alien invasion, but Luke, Leia, Mara, the Solo kids, and others lead the way in trying to deal with the Vong. They are assigned separate tasks so the book moves around a great deal.

Another main character is Corran Horn. I believe Mr. Stackpole created him back in the Rogue Squadron books. In this book Corran is a Jedi leader and is able to help Mara Jade and Anakin Solo with troubles on Dantooine. Luke seems to trust Corran, and Corran returns that trust by supporting Luke's efforts to rebuild the Jedi. Corran is a good sounding board for Luke because Luke still is riddled with uncertainties and needs another Jedi to listen to him. Other Jedi of note who help in the fight against the Vong are Kyp Durron and Ganner Rhysode.

Mara Jade has a particularly interesting role in Onslaught. She is still fighting a disease attached to her by the Vong, and she is far from the impressive fighter we have seen in previous times. Her energy is not there, and Luke is particularly concerned. Anakin lends a huge helping hand to Mara while at the same time he makes some progress in dealing with his guilt from the death of a much-loved Star Wars character in the previous book.

I found it interesting that after two books in the New Jedi Order the Vong are still a huge mystery. Nobody yet truly understands how they fight, how they think, what their plans are, how their ships and weapons work, or where they came from. All of the unknowns make them very difficult to fight. They are also completely disgusting, but they do pose a massive threat.

Judging by the number of books in the New Jedi Order series, the Vong are here to stay for quite a while. Dark Tide II: Ruin by the same author is next. I look forward to it.

Dark Tide I Onslaught Star Wars The New Jedi Order Book 2 Michael A Stackpole 9780345428547 Books Reviews

I think Stackpole did an overall great job continuing the NJO series with this entry. The story and pacing were well done and I found myself struggling to stop reading at some points. However, I do have a couple of nitpicky issues with this book; first being that some of the dialogue just seemed a little odd, particularly in regards to exchanges between Mara and Luke/Anakin. The second and more glaring issue that I noticed is that apparently *everyone* says, "emperor's black bones!" each time something bad happens. It obviously isn't a huge issue, but it kind of takes your focus away from the book when you automatically think, "ugh, there's that phrase again".
i dont know where to begin. i love star wars and the previous book vector prime, was a gripping book with a MAJOR character death
this could be a spoiler but i think its common knowledge by now who it is.
but this was the blandest follow up they could have written. maybe it would have been exciting if i had read it way back on release but now know the outcomes it was boring. also all the stories i have heard over the years about the "unstoppable " yuzhan vong seems greatly exagerated as right now they seem like stock alien invaders despite the major events in the previous book. i didnt think any book could bore me more than the crystal star did (which on rereading was better than i remembered) or planet of twilight(which was worse than i remembered) anyway on to the book.
we get one scene of han solo still moping over chewbacca's death then we dont see him again the remainder of the book.
theres almost no action this book. we get a very boring story of luke and jacen investigating the vong presence on belkadan
where jacen gets a vision of him self as a hero saving some prisoners only to get him self in trouble to have luke end up rescuing him.
while anakin solo and mara jade spend time on dantooine in an attempt to help mara fight her illness and to help anakin learn to not abuse the force as much. jaina spends time with rogue squadron. eventually all three story lines culminate at dantooine for a battle against the vong and even that is blandly written. leia luke and the others end up protecting colonists we dont know and don't really care about. in the end nothing really happens. i recommend this for hardcore star wars completists but even then its bland read. i wanted to give it 2 stars but i dont hate it i DO like the book but its just a very bland read.
