This is volume # 4 in a series by the talented author C. L. Wilson. However, this specific work, metaphorically, is like an automobile in idle. It just doesn't carry the action forward from volume # 3 ("King of Sword and Sky") into the next book, which would feature the climax to the 5 book series. And one hopes that there might be further future adventures for Rain and Ellysetta after that. But it is time to end this particular series and be on with it.In volume 3, many issues became clearer--such as the nature of Ellysetta's true parents, the doomed relationship between a Celerian noblewoman and a Fey warrior, the reason for the death of the kitlings (so precious for the future of the Fey), the power of the mages of Eld, the raw power of Ellysetta. In this volume, though, we seem to be reading a work that is, mostly, a rather static bridge to the climactic volume.
We do not learn much that is new. Rain's bond madness is manifesting itself. The doomed romance, noted in the previous paragraph, ends in a way that one would have expected. Ellysetta's true parents continue to be tortured. Celerian politics remains as Byzantine as ever.
Some moments, though, do emerge as special. The journey to see the Elves has some interesting twists. The king of the Elves allows Ellysetta to look into the future (although the Delphic pronouncements do not really make the long visit so worthwhile).
The book ends as the final struggle (so I assume) is about to begin. Questions to be resolved: Will Rain's and Ellysetta's bond become completed? Will the Fey and their allies triumph over the forced of the evil Mages? What will become of Ellysetta's parents? What will become of Ellysetta's Celerian step-family? And so on. The promise of such questions being addressed in Volume 5 will keep me interested. All in all, this work is a modest disappointment as the book rather meanders and does not advance greatly where we stood at the end of the third work. But I hope that this book is an aberration in what is otherwise a powerful series to this point.

Queen of Song and Souls Tairen Soul C L Wilson 9780843960600 Books Reviews
I agree with the comments made by previous reviewers. Wilson is one writer you really MUST read the previous novels of AND in order, to appreciate the excellence of her novels. Without the previous books, this would be quite confusing to a reader. This novel was a very long time in arriving in print, it was a long wait, but it was worth the wait. You can entirely escape your own troubles and tribulations very quickly for an entire day in this, or any of Wilson's, novel(s). Her characters are very vividly described, although the multiple races or species can be very confusing to a newcomer to the Fading Lands. This novel really does NOT deal well with the Queen's missing sisters. It does, however, provide much information about her parents, noted only briefly a few times in the previous novel. The King of the Eld proves himself to be a fascinating, if enigmatic addition to the series. The fate of the Fey guard with the Queen's younger sisters is still left open to interpretation for the upcoming novel. Yet, more of the Queen's "Dance" is being unveiled now for the reader. Wilson's novels are, for me, a strong blend of elements from Feehan's Carpathian novels (especially her most recent ones) and Tolkien's complex species and battles from Lord of the Rings novels. These are very complicated novels, but they are so intricately plotted, characters so vividly described (usually), magical fantasy enhanced that anyone who loves romance-fantasy-battle stories will be captivated. After Feehan's Carpathian line emerged strongly in the last few years, I wondered, as a reader, "What's left? Where else that's original can the romance genre go?" I think the answer clearly is, "To C.L. Wilson."
Brilliant & Creatively Written!
Just Wow! I am totally blown away. The series is brilliantly written with the world building and the dynasty of connections between the characters. This is one series that imagination and creativity of the plot exceeds any fantasy tale I have ever read. I found myself captivated from the very first book and towards the end of each book I couldn't wait to get to the next book to continue the flowing magical movie like visual of excitement the author's smooth writing revealed as it came alive upon the page.
I want to note however that each book is just a part of the story and must be read in order for the reader to understand the awesome plot and the connection between each character.
The main characters Ellysetta and Rain are magical and their passion is believable and steam up the pages throughout the series. The fey language will have you melting with heart felt emotions.
"Ver reisa ku'chae. Kem surah, sheitani. Your soul calls out. Mine answers, beloved." (Rain)
"Whatever your fate, I wil share it. Wherever your Path leads, there, too, walk I. Ver reisa ku'chae. Kem surah, sheitani." (Rain)
The Tairen creatures are creative as they are a form of great big cats with wings. They are humorous and playful but most importantly they are protective with a fierceness that will have you in awe. Steli is my favorite because of her protectiveness and heartwarming fondness of Ellie, she had me laughing out loud with her humor and actions.
The friendship between the Celierian (humans) Fae, Elves, characters bring forth the drama of family history, their fates of religion and beliefs, their turmoil of living and surviving, and their dedication of honor and soul wrenching love to die for.
"War is a strange thing, kem'jitanessa. I've seen bitter enemies fighting side by side, because they hate the thing they're fighting more than they hate each other. Sometimes you have to take your allies where you find them and hope for the best."
Throughout each book the reader will find the many examples of good (light) vs evil (darkness) and a discovery of how not all evil (darkness) is truly evil but a necessary action of protectiveness and love - a way of life. This is one of the reasons I love about this magical story.
"We are all the gods children. All our gifts come from them. It's what we do with those gifts that determines whether we walk in Light or Shadow."
The evil (darkness) of the Mages along with their demon possessed evil creatures will have you seething for revenge as the torture and graphic bloody scenery plays out in this action packed mystical story. The magical powers bestowed upon the Mages and their minions is bone chilling and will have you gripping the book tight as you read the scenes thinking OMG or WTF.
However, though the reader will be stunned from the horrific scenes of great loss, the passionate warmth of love and good deeds between each book leaves you with a fulfilled contentment up to the final climax of the breath taking Happy Ever After in the end.
Overall, I highly recommend this series for all Adult Fantasy fans and this fan of C.L. Wilson looks forward to reading more of her fantastic works.
