This wonderful, intriguing selection of stories span from 1996 to 2002, and recount one particular family's adventures abroad. Matthias Leue wrote this book about his sons Christian and Patrick, his extended family and friends as a time-portal capturing their time abroad and those unforgettable experiences. His slightly unsettled life of moving from place to place without a stable home is captured candidly within these pages, which are full of emotion, truth-drawing honesty and which fills one with a sense of hope and optimism. Humorous and complete with culinary tidbits (for cooking fans to devour), this interesting book explores different cultures and continents remicent of a travel guide but from a personal perspective!Stories take place in France, California, Oregon and Arizona to the East Coast and which are brought vividly to life with the beautiful watercolors and drawings that adorn the pages. I felt a connection with the narrative as I was drawn into each tale, as it is as if the author is reaching out to you as you take that markedly special journey with him around the globe. From discovering stale cheese in France to the delicacy Squid, this travel expedition is also a culinary feast for the eyes. What Matthias Leue has to say is truly fascinating, extraordinary and which gives the reader such an insight as you will have never experienced before. If you are traveling or journeying abroad then this book is a must-have companion, as it takes one on a fascinating voyage of discovery, which ultimately heightens ones exciting experiences when we travel to somewhere. This is a brilliant book and one that I highly recommend to any budding expeditionary!
An individual's experiences, memories and recollections of his time abroad and what it personally meant for him as well as observation of his family and friends. Just as each place and new encounter (good, bad, joyous and bizarre) touched each individual in a specific way it does likewise to the reader. You can connect with this book in such an intimate way as you cherish those moments in your own life, wherein you similarly may have encountered something abroad or during your own travels. You are able to clearly picture in your mind the extraordinary, foreign sights and smells of each new place - as if you are actually there! As someone who has not traveled beyond England (my home country) I was enchanted by this book, remicent of Jane Eyre who longs to travel and discover, hence like her I would call this my `escape book' as I could visit new places for a few hours.
Pure pleasure and so enjoyable, this charming book is a fabulous fusion of classic cuisine and timeless traveling that you will love!

Fish Camping and Other Travel Stories Matthias Leue 9780983535102 Books Reviews
Nice, gentle stories for Bay area armchair travelers. Road trips, European visits, restaurants and picnicking. A good rhythm and pace.
The subtitle of Matthias Leue's Fish Camping promises "amusing family adventures." Unfortunately, I found neither to be the case. Only a handful of the stories seems to involve Leue's sons, and with a few exceptions to prove the rule, their travels don't really qualify as adventures, at least to me. Leue's writing is quite clunky, containing many five dollar words (SO MANY five dollar words!) and awkward attempts at jokes. I also find several of Leue's actions to be rather unpleasant, such as leaving "cheese gone bad" on a stranger's doorstep (and then picturing the reaction of the finder before driving away), and sneering at a park ranger who leaves a note explaining a violation at Leue's campsite. This sort of behavior makes me hard to sympathize with a writer when they don't even seem to realize that they might be in the wrong!
Many of the drawings Leue included with his stories are quite lovely, but they couldn't save the book for me. I wish the author all the best with future endeavors, but he should find a good editor.

I really enjoyed this afternoon read. At one point I had to put the book down and go grab a hot cup of coffee, a fresh slice of homemade bread w/brie before I could continue reading. All of the food descriptions had me hungry and wanting to travel. Having lived in the Bay area myself and in Italy I truly enjoyed the stories and laughed out loud at some of the descriptions of tourist sights. It seems no matter where you go on vacation you encounter the same ques and same hassles along with the beauties of touring a new or familiar land. It was a great afternoon get away for me.
This book was like you were sitting around the campfire with the author and their family and friends, all telling great stories that you could not help but laugh and snicker at, whether they are true or tall tales. The writing takes you there, the descriptions of everything including the surroundings would make you feel there. I would definitely recommend this book for some fun and lightheartedness that will add a smile to your day.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book - it took me the first 2 stories or so to get into it, but once I "caught the rhythm" of the relaxed travelling detailed in it, I enjoyed it more and more as I read.
The author has the right idea of travelling, enjoying both the usual tourist places and sights, while also stopping long enough to "smell the roses" in smaller places. (I have a tendency to travel that way myself, thanks to the influence of my mother).
The book reads conversationally and is very relaxing to read, giving you the feeling that you are there with the author, reveling in his relaxed travels and smiling at the sights and simple beauty that he finds along the way.
I enjoyed it very much, and would definitely recommend it!
