So far, I've read three Laura Kinsale novels (Flowers from the Storm, The Shadow and the Star and this one) and have not been disappointed. Though Flowers from the Storm still holds rank as a favorite, I really, really enjoyed this book. The letters in the beginning make you fall in love with the sense of humor and sweetness of both the hero and heroine and you never get tired of feeling compassionate for both of them in their difficult circumstances. You root for them throughout the book. It's really those tiny jokes and quirky sense of humor from Folly that make her one of the most endearing heroines I have read. And even though the hero does act like a jerk in some spots, you know exactly why - and you also know that he gets her better than anyone else and does want to be with her. I really think this is worth reading for the genre and should be higher ranked on historical romance novel lists!

Laura Kinsale writes such wonderful, interesting and flawed characters. Robert Camburne and Folie Hamilton are not the cliché romance novel principles. To begin with, they meet by letter and they are married to other people at the opening of the book. The plot driver is a mysterious enemy using an hallucinogenic drug on the hero. His disastrous first marriage and his hallucinations threaten to completely sabotage not just his relationship with Folie, but his entire life as well. With humor and good sense, Folie is the perfect antidote to poison.
Laura Kinsale has got to be one of the most talented writers (of any genre) out there. I read My Sweet Folly back when it was first published in '97, and I make a point to reread it a couple times a year - it's that good.

I'm not going to recap the plot - you get the jist of it from other reviews and the descriptions. The writing is really witty - you just love Folly's spunk. And yes, Robert is dark and tormented, but I disagree with the reviewers who called him cruel. You always get that he loves the heroine very deeply, and that it is the one constant through his haze of madness. True, it's not your typical romance book, but that's exactly why it's so special. It has a lot of depth, and is superbly written. Five stars.
It is easy to see why Folie is Kinsale's favourite heroine. She is unloved, but loving. An unhappy marriage harms her but does not make her bitter. She reaches for friendship and love, only to be betrayed, humbled and hurt - but she is not destroyed. She is kind, looks for good, is sometimes dimwitted in the face of danger (to the point of irritation when she goes over the ladder) but she is clever as well. She is courageous, not only when confronting danger to protect those she loves, but also when staring down Robert's mad and then appalling behaviour to her. She works out how to unlock Robert's heart without knowing all the questions, let alone the answers.
As for the animals, I couldn't care less about the ferret. It is the cat at Tattersals that teaches the best lesson.
I'm not even very interested in the secondary characters, the villains, the neighbours and Byron included, even though they are deftly drawn.
Kiinsale is one of my favourite romance writers and, in My Sweet Folly, she weaves a rollicking adventure/mystery very deftly through the journey of a developing but difficult resurrection of a once doomed love affair.
Her story is packed with further detail about Robert - his earlier tormented marriage, his fascination with and respect for Indian mysticism, his calculated use of an unscrupulous fakir's tricks, his rage, self-hatred and self-doubt, the disturbing glimpses of muddled to dangerous madness, as well as his ghastly treatment of Folie after they have married.
Kinsale is just as comfortable in showcasing the stifling restrictions of English village life, the snobbish life of the ton and the obligatory mention of nights at Almacks.
All well and good, but by no means the full story.
For it is the the letters between Folie and Robert that are the stars of this romance. They invite re-reading and re-reading. They are sweet, tender, clever, passionate, naughty and downright swoon-making.
I stumbled across this book. It appears (from the author's comments above regarding 15 years) to be a re-release (but why no reviews of paperback versions?) into ebook format for the first time. If so, I can't understand why had never recommended it to me, as I had already bought every one of Kinsale's ebook titles, after previously reading praise of her work by the highly talented Loretta Chase. (Anyone she praises is worth reading, in my view.)
I highly recommend My Sweet Folly and hope that we can look for a steady stream of further ebook releases.
one of my favorite authors,but I was disappointed by this novel, The letters are wonderful and the book starts off really well. Half way the author seems to have lost her way. She contrives a nonsensical plot involving our H. Its almost as if two different authors wrote this book
The story's plot felt slipshod and uncohesive. The heroine's behavior put her unnecessarily in peril and the hero was all over the place in his actions in a way that caused confusion for the reader rather than added to the plot. I skimmed a good portion of the book.
The best part of this book is the prologue. It promises a heatwrenching romance which is always my favorite read. Then a few chapters on it transforms into a gothic, dark, political drama which as other commenters say is all over the place. I love the heroine but I lost the hero completely.
The writing is good but not the story. My three stars are strictly for the prologue.
Laura Kinsale is the best, no question. There is nothing ordinary about her protagonists. Either in their abilities or their situations she manages to tell a story which resonates with her readers in spite of being outside the reader's ken. Folly and Robert meet through letters. A relationship develops in spite of his being in India in the military and she being the second wife of a much older husband in England.When Folly begins to realize she loves him, Robert tells her he is married and all communication ceases. But both lives go on, and there lies the tale.
