Husband Fur Hire Bears Fur Hire Book 1 edition by T S Joyce Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews
I love T.S. Joyce books. This is one of her older series. It is a shifter series like her others but different as well. Ian is a bear shifter and changes at will but unlike her other books he hibernates like a real bear for about six months out of the year. I am not sure how I feel about that part. I loved this book excerpt for that hibernating part but it did add an interesting twist to the book. So, I don’t totally hate it. Elyse puts an ad for a husband for hire after her last relationship ends horribly. When Ian shows up at her door she assumes that he is there to respond to the ad. Ian is a shifter enforcer and when he wakes from his hibernation he finds order for his next job. That job leads him to Elyse. He knows by just looking at her picture that she is meant to be his. Ian fights his attracted to her. He knows she deserves more than he can offer her. But eventually he gives in and just like he thought once he sees her he can’t leave her. Plus, there is this husband for hire business. Maybe he can’t give her everything but he can give her the things that really matter. He decides to do what he can and hope that is it enough. This book was emotional for both Elyse and Ian. The more he gets to know her the more he loves her and leaving her will be next to impossible for him. Will she still want to him when she learns all his secrets? This book pulled me in and I can’t wait to read the next one.
I finished it...but not because it was a page turner. The plot is thin and a stretch. It had many child-like imagination moments where things didn't feel believable. That, peppered with unromantic sex scenes that didn't capture my attention. There were gaps in the plot in the beginning that were only somewhat answered by finishing the book. I was disappointed in the character development and the timeline of events. Their love story didn't come together for me during the couple of weeks they had together. It was also unclear how the character Lincoln made the transition to "brides maid" from the winter fall out. I couldn't reconcile this relationship. It was hurried in spots that it needed to elaborate on. I'd love this one to take a revision. It had lots of potential but missed in editing. I wouldn't recommend this one to a friend.
I liked it a lot! I just didn't obsessively love it like I do all of Ms. Joyce's other works. I really enjoyed the Alaskan setting, and I liked the both the Hero and the heroine a lot. The characters weren't QUITE so well fleshed out as in her other works, but they're still miles better than 98% of the other currently popular drivel out there. I expect the next book to be better as she gets more comfortable with the setting and the series.
Even though I have Unlimited, I still purchased this book as I did "Last Immortal Dragon" simply because I wish to support this wonderful author in all of her endeavors.
I think my only frustration is that she now has so many bear shifter series (which are all awesome!) but that don't exist within the same rules universe. Like in some series, humans can be turned into shifters, in others a bite is fatal, etc. But, you settle into each one easily enough.
I honestly can't recommend any of the works by this author strongly enough... I have high standards, and I've gone back to re-read her books several times. She also always delivers and doesn't make her fans wait forever for the next book and new work, so I'm willing to purchase her books and keep supporting that!
3-3.5 stars
**Fair warning - I let a spoiler out...mainly having to do with Ian being a bear-shifter and the unusual way that affects the MC's HEA**
This was a good story overall. I liked both Elyse and Ian and their story was enjoyable. This is the first story I've read by this author and I liked it well enough that I would consider trying more of her work in the future.
Elyse is a woman that owns a homestead in Alaska that she's trying to make a living off of. This wouldn't be so difficult if she hadn't gotten involved with her ex, Cole. Cole was a leach who took all her money and food and left her with nothing. She kicked him out when he made the mistake of hitting her but by that time, Cole had already pretty much drained her dry.
Ian is a bear shifter that hibernates half the year and works as a pilot around Alaska the rest of the time. Ian also works as a shifter enforcer that takes down other shifters that have gone off the deep end and kill humans and/or threaten to expose the shifter secret to the public. Ian has 2 brothers but they haven't been in touch much since they matured because their bears can't stand each other.
After Elyse kicked Cole out, she didn't have hardly any reserves and even with working her butt off, Elyse was having issues stocking up enough meat and supplies for the winter season that is approaching in a few months. Many years ago, her Uncle (who she inherited the homestead from) had placed an ad in the paper for a companion/helper. He ended up with a woman that became like a mother to Elyse and the pairing worked out well. Elyse decided to try something like that and put an ad in the paper for her own husband. She doesn't have much luck with finding a decent prospect though. Ian had to take Cole down because he went mad and started killing humans. Months later, Ian went to Elyse's cabin to deliver a message but when he meets her, he finds he can't leave without trying to help her.
Ian ends up acting as though he is looking to answer Elyse's ad and it's a rough start but they decide to give it a try and get married if things go well through the winter. Ian is great about teaching Elyse the things she needs to know and doesn't yet (like how to trap and shoot better) and he helps her stock up her reserves, determined to make sure that she'll be provided for over the winter. The thing he doesn't tell her at first (and I wondered how they were going to get around it) is the fact that in this mythos, bear shifters hibernate through the winter so Elyse would be stuck spending the winter by herself...how could Ian explain that? Eventually, Elyse learns the whole truth (including that Ian is a shifter) and she's able to accept Ian but neither of them are thrilled with the winters she'll have to spend on her own. There's also some trouble with Cole's brother who is also rather whacked in the head and needs to be handled. In the end, Elyse and Ian work things out and have their HEA together.
This was an enjoyably story. I liked Ian and Elyse but I have to admit that the whole story I was thinking that the HEA wouldn't be completely happy because the couple will only ever get to spend 6 month together out of every year. It worked out for the most part but it's not you typical HEA to be sure. I also had some trouble keeping engaged in the story but this might have been partially because I wasn't sure what to expect out of the ending and was a bit reluctant to find out. Overall, it was a good story but I wasn't majorly thrilled with a HEA that includes long separations between the MCs.
Loved it. A fast-pace page turner. The characters are well-developed and believable. Sex scenes are hot, hot, hot!
